There are 90 days of my life I simply cannot account for. No memories. No anchor to reality. While the people who loved me watched and waited, I was living inside a fantasy world my damaged brain had built for itself. That is what encephalopathy did to me, and that is where this book begins.
Encephalopathy is a catch-all term for brain damage and disease. I had never heard the word until I became a sufferer. What followed was one of the most disorienting journeys a person can take: waking up in a body and a life that felt only partially yours, trying to reconcile who you were with who you have become. That question, and the courage it takes to face it honestly, is at the heart of Leaving La-La Land.
I came into the world as a carpenter. Somewhere along the way I also became an educator, a management consultant, and a lifelong student of how people and organizations grow through difficulty. But none of that prepared me for the difficulty of losing myself, and none of it matters as much to me now as the conversation I hope this book starts.
If you or someone you love has been touched by brain injury, illness, or the quiet grief of becoming someone new, I want you to know you are not alone in that experience. I am still figuring it out too. Come find me here, or at RobertKBosscha.com.
