In 2012, William Everett Darcy unexpectedly inherits control of Everett Armaments Industries, a lucrative weapons manufacturer which had been founded by his maternal great-grandfather. Already at odds with most of his late mother's family, his relationship with them is further strained by the fact that the disappointed presumed heir to the company, Louis Bourger II, is both a cousin of his and his step-father.

The situation only worsens after Bourger's legal challenges to the bequest are thrown out of court. His stepfather will not go away quietly. He is willing to use any tactic available to him to recapture his prize, legal or not.

Not long after Darcy returns to New York to assume responsibility for EAI, he meets Elizabeth Bennet, an aspiring professional photographer. Despite an inauspicious beginning, the two of them quickly develop a strong rapport that will help sustain Darcy as he tries to settle both old and new scores. Unfortunately, Elizabeth's connection to him soon puts her directly at risk as well, but for reasons not wholly related to the ownership of EAI.
