In 2002 I donated a kidney to my brother. This book is an account of my personal experience along with some advice for anyone considering donating a kidney to a loved one.
Told mainly in chronological order I explain my reasons for donating, the initial blood testing and how it felt to discover I was the only viable donor.
Perhaps most useful for the potential donor, I give advice on how to prepare physically for the surgery and how to ease back into full fitness afterwards.
I also talk about some of the many day to day concerns; financial problems, the constant travelling to the hospital and worrying about getting back to work; as well as the countless small details such as what to wear after the surgery and setting up a friend phone and email tree (this was before Facebook).
The book also talks about the difficulties of handling episodes of rejection, particularly in the very early days of a transplant and trying to let go of the recipient's care and focus on caring for yourself after the operation.
