Excerpt from Magisterial Reports: Having Reference to the Occupation by the Enemy of and the Attitude of the Population in the Districts Now or Recently Under Martial Law, (Being a Return to a Resolution Adopted by the Honourable the House of Assembly on the 26th July, 1900)
3,150. 30th June. The Attorney-General would like to have a report from you on the general state of your district so far as you can ascertain it during the time it was in virtual occupation of the Queen's enemies. What Mr. Innes is specially anxious to know is what proportion of people of district joined enemy, and what proportion either refused to join or left district. Also the extent to which commandeering by the enemy went on. What restraints, if any, were imposed upon those who refused to identify themselves with the invaders? Whether any looting took place? Whether the Colonial rebels took any specially prominent part in the direction of affairs in the adoption of aggressive measures against loyalists! And generally the condition of the district during hostile occupation? It is desired that your report should be received before Parliament meets. Mr. Innes is aware that under these circumstances you will not be able to report in great detail, but he trusts you will do the best you can in the time at your disposal.
