More Details
Edward John Eyre was the first white man to explore the terrifying inland deserts of Australia and the salt lake that bears his name; and after enduring a journey of incredible hardship he became the first explorer to cross the Nullarbor Plain.
Though celebrated in Australia, Eyre was probably one of the most misrepresented men in the history of British colonialism. After a brief term as Lieutenant Governor of New Zealand, he became Governor of Jamaica. There, by mistaking a local riot for a full-scale Negro uprising and crushing it with great savagery, he became the centre of a controversy which involved some of the great minds of the day.
