Facsimile of the hoax auction catalogue issued in 1840. This facsimile edition with an added introduction was produced as a memento of a meeting of the Phylobiblon Club at Jenkintown Pennsylvania around 1969. The Introduction is adapted from the paper Lessing Rosenwald read that evening. In 1840 the world's foremost book collectors and librarians received an auction catalogue of 52 unique and highly desirable books. Each treasure was described in detail and designed to appeal to one of these illustrious bibliophiles. On August 10th they converged (one stagecoach carried Brunet, Techener, Renouard, and Charles Nodier) on the tiny Belgian town of Binche, only to discover there was no auction. Count Fortsas and his coveted books were imaginary. The elaborate hoax was carried out by a retired military officer Renier Hubert Ghislain Chalon, who delighted in pranks designed to befuddle the academic world. Chalon also published more than one false archeological discovery. Fifteen years after the hoax the printer of this catalogue, M. Hoyois wanted to reprint this highly collectible catalogue but was prevented by the courts. Instead he published a transcript of the trial.
