The United States Agricultural industry is often overlooked with regard to security. The source of this could be from complacency or the impracticality of securing large-scale food production; however it is a present vulnerability. The threats and risks to American agricultural were observed as well as a survey of Americans on how they procure their food and their confidence in the government’s ability to respond to a food crisis. The study was a survey that was used to determine if Americans are wholly or partly dependent on large-scale food production. It was also used to observe their assurance in preparedness for a food disaster. The resulting data was not surprising in that it proved America is not prepared for a large scale disaster, intentional or unintentional. While a catastrophic event would have severe repercussions, the most likely result would be an economic upset. The study recognized the United States’ ill-preparedness for an attack or disaster to its large-scale food production. Further recommended studies are the viability of decentralizing food production and improving the reporting system for non-animal to human communicable diseases (i.e. foot and mouth).
