"On Dumpster Diving" is a classic American essay read by and tought to millions. On the surface, it is an exposition on how to eat (safely) from dumpsters for those that find themselves down and out, like the author was himself. But it is much more than that. It's a lesson in exposition, of using elevated prose to describe low circumstances, of the power of language to humanize and even ennoble.
