More Details
As Major General William T. Sherman advanced towards Atlanta in June of 1864, he was stalled at Kennesaw Mountain by Confederates led by General Joseph E. Johnston. A stalemate caused Sherman to attack Cheatham Hill and Pigeon Hill, which he felt were vulnerable. Sherman failed, causing him to revert to his previously successful flanking maneuvers.
