History of Welsh tribal leader Vortigern who came to power in 425 CE, and formed alliances with Saxons to battle the Picts. He cooperated with the remnants of the Roman council and Roman official Ambrosius the Elder, after the last legions departed in 418 CE. Born around 380, Vortigern ruled for 67 years and died in 447 CE. Later betrayed by the Saxons, Vortigern alienated his allies and sons, lost power, and was killed by Ambrosius. Vortigern preceded legendary British ruler King Arthur by perhaps a quarter-century. There is no known connection between them.
