More Details
This is a publication about the last days of the camp, its evacuation, as well as what happened at the Auschwitz-Birkenau site in the first months after liberation, before the Museum was established. It presents a rich selection of archival photographs, some of which are being published for the first time together with explanitory texts written by Auschwitz Museum hisotorian Dr. Jacek Lachendro. After the liberation of Auschwitz, Soviet and Polish filmmakers and photojournalists worked at the site of the camp, collecting unique photo and film material. Many photographs were also taken by photojournalists working for the Soviet and Polish commissions investigating German crimes at the Auschwitz site. In addition, the Auschwitz Museum archives have collected many photographs taken at the site of the former camp by medical personnel of the post-war hospitals for the liberated and by former prisoners themselves. Additionally, important documents are also presented.
