More Details

Guido Reni was the star painter of the Italian Baroque, one of the most successful artists in Europe, coveted by the most important clients. Like no other, he translated the beauty of the divine into painting - regardless of whether it was about the Christian heaven or the ancient world of gods. This also earned Reni his nickname »il divino«. Later often misunderstood and suppressed, it deserves to be rediscovered. The catalog for the exhibition in the Städel Museum presents his work as well as his ambivalent personality comprehensively and with new research results. For the first time in over 30 years, his fascinating paintings, drawings and etchings are brought together again and offer a new look at one of the greats of Italian art.

GUIDO RENI (1575–1642), active in Bologna and Rome, made a name for himself with religious and mythological subjects. Even his contemporaries saw him as a kind of counterpart to Caravaggio's art. "The Divine" thus became one of the defining figures of European painting for two centuries.
