Olive Sarver’s best friend Ross Winters died of an opiate overdose on July 16, 2019.
Three months later, Olive lives in his apartment, unwilling to let go of his possessions. She would rather trip over the steel-toe of his work boots than move them from beside the door. This wasn’t how Ross was supposed to die—he was supposed to thrive well past twenty-eight years.
Olive feels utterly alone in her fight to prove Ross’s overdose was unintentional. She believes someone was careless in their chemistry or sinister in their marketing, yet no one is listening to her. Everyone accepts his death without question.
Convinced someone tampered with Ross’s pills, Olive wants to personify karma, interfere, and cause damage to them.
Meanwhile, Olive finds herself befriending a man named Fred. As their connection intensifies, so does the trail that’s leading Olive to Ross’s dealer. It’s becoming impossible to cultivate a relationship with Fred without confessing her desire to kill the person who gave the fentanyl-laced pill to Ross.
It’s one thing for Olive to plot murder in her head, but it’s a whole other beast to share these thoughts with another living soul. Fred will become an obstacle or an accomplice. He may dismiss her or even turn her into the police.
Regardless, murdering the person who Olive believes killed Ross will provide her closure. Vindication will heal her grief, or so she thinks.
Is Olive doing the right thing, taking matters into her own hands? Considering Ross isn’t coming back, what’s the worst that could happen?
